About
SCAD CoMotion is a student-led conference that fosters creativity, innovation, and collaboration across design disciplines. As the graphic design lead, I guided the group while also contributing hands-on work to ideate and curate the illustrative visuals for the conference. Our general concept focused on the theme of transformation, using the metaphor of a moth's metamorphosis to represent personal and creative growth. We developed a series of title cards and graphic elements that visually communicated this journey, blending intricate illustrations with dynamic design to enhance the conference’s narrative and atmosphere.

Our Direction
Our branding package creates a unified visual identity through key graphic design elements that align with the overarching narrative of the three chapters: Choose, Face, and Become. Each chapter will explore distinct phases of transformation, with the moth serving as a central symbol of growth, metamorphosis, and reincarnation.
In the Choose chapter, close-up imagery of the moth will signify the moment of decision, paired with fluid, glowing shapes that represent the potential and possibilities that lie ahead. As the design progresses into the Face chapter, the moth will evolve, embodying the confrontation with challenges, with dynamic light trails and shifting forms reflecting the struggle and change. Finally, in the Become chapter, the moth will fully transform, symbolizing the culmination of growth. Our design elements became more refined and harmonious, reinforcing these themes of evolution and self-realization.
Throughout the branding, stylistic variations unfold naturally, with changes in design elements, composition, and typography reflecting the journey through each chapter. These shifts maintain a delicate balance, ensuring the visuals complement the narrative and enhance the viewer's experience without overwhelming the story’s message.

Our team went through a rigorous ideation process, working through six stages to explore the best way to visually represent the transformation of self. Each phase allowed us to experiment with different styles and motifs until we landed on an illustration style that captured the essence of the event’s theme. The chosen style, featuring intricate linework and organic, flowing shapes, symbolized the dynamic journey of change.Through this process, the title cards not only communicated the narrative visually but also maintained a cohesive style that supported the overall theme. The final designs our team designed were then animated by the animation team.
For this three-month project, I was balancing design lead, and designer/producer responsibilities, so having a well-organized workspace was necessary. I set up our team’s Notion to track deadlines, deliverables, and progress, which gave our creative directors a clear overview of where things stood at any moment. I also created a shared Miro board that became our main space for leaving thoughtful, visual feedback. This was especially important for our overseas teammates, who needed a way to review updates and respond on their own schedules. Together, these tools kept everyone aligned, made communication smoother, and helped the project move forward without losing momentum. This allowed for productive zoom meetings when we could all meet.
The banners and print materials for the 2025 CoMotion emphasize the growth stages of transformation through layered and tiered graphics. This design approach visually reflects the progression of change, with each layer representing a distinct phase of growth. The arrangement creates depth and dimension, reinforcing the journey from one stage to the next, while the intricate details unify the design, offering a cohesive and impactful experience that echoes the event's theme of personal evolution.
